About Restorative Justice in the Community
What Do We Do?
Our Project works in conjunction with the Gardai & District Court to provide an alternative way to respond to the harm caused by offending. Restorative Justice regards crime as an injury against a victim and a community and seeks to encourage the offender to take responsibility for their actions and to consider the impact of their offending behavior.
RJC seeks to make a positive impact on the communities that it serves. If you are a person who is committed to their community then you could work with us to provide this valuable service in your area.
What's Involved
RJC is a community-based initiative and is wholly dependent on the goodwill and participation of its volunteers.
Two volunteers attend each Reparation Panel Meeting which leads to the agreement of a Contract of Reparation, as outlined above. Our volunteers come from all walks of life. One thing they all have in common is their community spirit and their desire to do good in their community.
RJC seeks to make a positive impact on the communities that it serves. If you are a person who is committed to their community then you could work with us to provide this valuable service in your area. RJC has been very successful since its inception. Of those referred to our project, 75-80% did not re-offend or come before the District Court again. This is a result that we are keen to maintain.
What's required for this position
Full training will be provided for all volunteers. The most important skills are an ability to listen and empathise in a non-judgemental manner.
The role requires the ability to encourage the individual who has been referred from the District Court to take responsibility and make better choices and therefore, a certain level of maturity and life experience is essential.
In addition to this it is vital that volunteers understand that all matters discussed at meetings are confidential and cannot be discussed with those outside of the project.
