What's Involved

Dublin City Volunteer Centre (DCVC) is the ‘one-stop-shop’ for volunteering in the Dublin city area. We are a registered charity in Ireland and a member of Volunteer Ireland and the network of 29 Volunteer Centres nationally.

You will be working closely with the Chair and other board members to provide strategic direction and good governance of DCVC. You will support the Centre Manager who is responsible for the day-to-day running of the Centre.

We are looking for a board member with a background in finance/accountancy/bookkeeping. The role does not include any bookkeeping - DCVC has an MoU with an accountant who provides one day's accountancy services per month, including financial statements.

Role Details

  • Oversee and approve budgets, accounts and financial statements.
  • Prepares and presents financial reports to the board in an understandable way.
  • Ensures that the Centre’s financial resources meet its needs.
  • Ensure that appropriate accounting procedures and controls are in place.
  • Liaises with any staff/volunteers about financial matters.
  • Chair the finance committee of the Board.
  • Advises on the financial implications of any new projects or activities.
  • Sign off on the Annual Audit of Accounts (last year we transitioned to charties SORP).
  • Oversees the appointment of Auditors.
  • Presents the accounts to the AGM.
  • Ensures that the Organisation has good and prudent accounting procedures, including a reserves policy.
  • Oversees the appointment of Bankers to the Centre.
  • Support the manager with strategic organisational development
  • Prepare adequately for and regularly attend board meetings
  • Evaluate, reflect and take an active part in board discussions
  • Be respectful of and build trust with management while holding management
  • Act as ambassadors for the Centre, actively promoting the work of the organisation
  • Commit to ensuring best practice is adhered in relation to governance and accountability

  • The Board
    DCVC’s Board of Trustees is made up of a number of committed and experienced volunteers from the voluntary, community and private sector. They are a group of forward thinking and supportive people that strive to govern DCVC is a positive and proactive manner.

    Time Commitment
    The Board typically meets six to seven times per year, and board meetings are two hours’. Board meetings are currently Mondays 12:15-2/2:15pm (lunch provided when in DCVC); however, the Board is open to reconsidering times and venues for board meetings. Additional meetings of sub committees are arranged, as required, by the members involved.

    Support & Training

  • The new director will receive a formal induction and will be given access to all relevant policies and the board handbook.
  • The Chair of the board and the Centre Manager will be available for support and advice. A mentor system will be in place for the first few months if desired.
  • New directors will have an opportunity to avail of training incl. governance training to meet the requirements of the roles where necessary and/or resources allow.

    What's required for this position

  • Experience and/ or background in Finance/accountancy/bookkeeping
  • An interest in exploring new ideas and approaches to volunteering and NGO management
  • A genuine interest in the community and voluntary sector and a commitment to volunteering
