What's Involved
As a Reading Buddy or Maths Buddy you will help a child to develop their skills and confidence through one-to-one mentoring sessions. These take place in the child’s school during the term, usually in the mornings.
Reading Buddies will engage in paired reading with students between the ages of 8 and 14, offering support and encouragement when required.
Maths Buddies will work on very basic maths skills with students between the ages of 7 and 9, including reading numbers, addition, subtraction, and basic multiplication and division.
TIME COMMITMENT
One hour, twice a week for 7 or 8 weeks during the school term (14–16 hours in total), plus 1–3 hours of training and a short briefing session at the school in advance of the project starting.
TRAINING
Reading Buddies will complete online training, followed by a short briefing session in the school the week before the programme commences.
Maths Buddies will complete a 2-hour, in-person training session, followed by a short briefing session in the school the week before the programme commences.
GARDA VETTING
All volunteers must complete Garda vetting through Suas prior to the start of volunteering.
