About HSE E-Leisure Buddies Initiative

The Leisure Buddies Initiative caters for adults with a disability who attend HSE Day Services. The aim is to create flexible social supports and activities, outside of the traditional 9 to 5 day services. We aim to contribute to their well-being and enable them to become active citizens in their local community.

We began with face to face meet ups between adults with disabilities and their volunteers, but due to the Covid-19 situation are now offering an online "E-Leisure Buddies" services instead.

What's Involved

Volunteer with HSE Day Services and befriend an adult with a disability.

  • Support them with their interests and community integration.
    • They meet up a minimum of once a month and attend social outings. Enable their buddy to gain support in any aspect of their life on a one to one basis.
    • The keyworker/ Leisure Buddies Coordinator will accompany the volunteer and buddy on a few occasions until they both feel comfortable.
    • Enable your buddy to socialise locally and form friendships.
    • Encourage your buddy to gain new skills and experience new things.
    • Activities could be as simple as going for a cup of tea or as exciting as heading to a concert on a bus or attending a football match.
    • Willingness to complete online training when necessary
    • Prepared to use PPE gear when deemed necessary and complete relevant training

      Most activities will take place during evenings or weekends, but there is flexibility depending on the availability of the particular volunteer and their buddy.

      What's required for this position

      An interest in supporting someone with a disability, willingness to attend training and learn about the role.

      Willingness to complete online training needed to carry out your role safely i.e COVID 19 precautions & guidelines

      Able to commit to a minimum of a couple of hours once a month for at least a year.

      Fluent English
