Leisure Buddy Volunteer

Leisure Buddies Initiative

About Leisure Buddies Initiative

The Leisure Buddies Initiative caters for adults with an intellectual disability who attend the HSE Day Services in Monaghan. The aim is to create flexible social supports within their own communities, outside of the traditional 9 to 5 day service hours. We aim to contribute to their well-being and enable them to become active citizens in their local community.

They are matched up with a volunteer with whom they share common interests, similar age and area. They meet up at least once a month and attend a social outing together on a one to one basis.

What's Involved

  • They meet up at least once a month and attend social outings, gain support in any aspect of their life on a one to one basis.
  • The coordinator will accompany the volunteer and buddy on a few occasions until they both feel comfortable.
  • Enable your buddy to socialise locally and form friendships.
  • Encourage your buddy to gain new skills and experience new things.
  • Activities could be as simple as going for a cup of tea or as exciting as heading to a concert on a bus or attending a football match.
Most activities will take place during evenings or weekends, but there is flexibility depending on the availability of the particular volunteer and their buddy.
