The Doorway Initiative aims to enable asylum seekers and refugees who are are currently staying in a reception centre, to volunteer at a number of events in Dublin over the summer. The pilot project will take place from June to September and will consist of three to four volunteering events. Each event aims to involve 10 – 20 volunteers. As volunteer project coordinator, your role will involve connecting in with charities hosting events, overseeing the recruitment of volunteers, coordinating logistics and administration and volunteering alongside the participants.

The initiative was created, as Dublin City Volunteer Centre recognises that volunteering is an effective way for people with a refugee/ asylum seeker background to feel connected to their new community, build a network, make friends and grow skills. However, volunteering can be difficult for people who are living in reception centres due to their transient nature and logistical challenges. This project aims to spark an interest in volunteering amongest participants and to explore different concepts of facilitating volunteering for people in transition.

Roles/ Responsibilities

  • Assist people staying in a reception centre to have fun volunteering at charity events.
  • Communicating / coordinate with the nominated Volunteer Event Leader, who will be in charge of the recruitment of participants.
  • Communicating with participating volunteers, make logistical arrangements and answer questions as they arise. .
  • Collaborating with the hosting charity organisation to ensure a smooth volunteering experience. Volunteering alongside participants.
  • Record Keeping
  • Assisting with the project impact report.

    Location of volunteering opportunity:
    Dublin City Volunteer Centre, Unit 4 Whitefriars, Aungier Street, Dublin 2 or remotely from home; various locations across Dublin City
