Dog/Cat Sanctuary Volunteer

ACS Animal Care Society

About ACS Animal Care Society

The Animal Care Society (Cork) is a registered charity which was formed in October 2000.

The aim of the Animal Care Society is stated in its name, to try and provide care to all animals in Cork City and County that require it so far as their funds and facilities allow. They are almost entirely made up of volunteers who give their time and effort to help the animals.

The Cork ACS is one of the few organisations that run a full time animal sanctuary.
In addition, the ACS runs a small charity shop in Togher (Cork) from which all proceeds go to fund the work of the ACS.
The ACS has since its foundation tried to assist members of the public in cases of genuine financial hardship if they were unable to pay veterinary fees for sick/injured animals.

What's Involved

Volunteers must have way of getting to and from the Sanctuary as there is no access to the Sanctuary by Public transport. This volunteer opportunity involves walking the dogs at their sanctuary, feeding the animals, grooming the cats, cleaning up, helping to re-adjust the animals to their new environment helping to socialise animals to human company, etc. You will be part of a team of likeminded animal lovers who all share their love for animals..

Please note that a car is needed to get out to their sanctuary which is located in a very rural location outside Kilmichael (between Dunmanway and Macroom), and is not on a bus route.

Please note, the sanctuary runs on a 24/7/365 basis and requires help 7 days per week to function, which allows volunteers to select times which suit them best.

You will receive many benefits as a volunteer with the Animal Care Society such as:-
- You will gain general animal husbandry skills, especially for felines
- A working knowledge of many different types of animal illnesses and conditions
- A knowledge of dealing with companion animals who have come into them from a rescue environment
- Knowledge of the Feline TNR (Trap / Neuter / Return) program operation.

What's required for this position

Volunteers need a caring nature, a love of animals and not be afraid to get stuck into the work. Note - it could get mucky so volunteers should bring wet weather gear.
