About Saint Patrick's Cathedral
Saint Patrick's Cathedral is primarily a place of worship but most of its day to day work is as a major tourist destination.
The Education Department are responsible for the delivery of education sessions to visiting groups such as Primary and Secondary schools. In 2017/18 nearly 5000 students of every age received some form of interaction with a member of the Education Department. In order to increase the Cathedral’s capacity to deliver these education sessions the department is hoping to create a panel of Volunteer Education Facilitators.
Education Facilitators will be asked to work directly with visiting school/ community groups in specific subject areas.
Education sessions generally involve a guided tour of the Cathedral followed by an activity which is focussed around one subject area. (Either History, Art, Architecture, Religion or Music).
We are looking for facilitators who are specialists in one or more of these subject areas.
Facilitators will also be asked to contribute toward the continuing development of new activities and the promotion of education sessions to schools/ community groups.
Volunteer facilitators will be asked to commit to at least 6 months or at most 1 year at a time. After 1 year volunteers can recommit to another 6-12 months. The commitment in terms of hours would depend mostly on the demand from schools for specific subject areas. Visiting schools/ community generally visit between the hours of 10.00 until 14.00 and a volunteer facilitator may expect to be asked to deliver one session per week but may be asked to deliver more depending on demand.
Support and Supervision
Education Facilitators primary point of contact in the Cathedral is the Education Officer. In his/ her absence another member of the Education department may also deal with any problems/ issues arising. Yearly support meetings are held between volunteers and the Education Officer in order to discuss any problems which may have arisen and also to establish if the volunteer wishes to recommit for another 6-12 months.
