About Sligo Samaritans

To provide 24 hour emotional support to people who write, visit, phone or email. Volunteers provide acceptance & listening to others on their helpline: Special Free Phone Number: 116123 / Lo Call 071 91 42011 1890 200 091 (Republic of Ireland)

What's Involved

The Samaritans are looking for volunteers for their centre three hours per week and one overnight per month to listen & provide emotional support to callers.

For over 30 years, Samaritans have been active in the Sligo community. Ordinary people have become extraordinary by volunteering to keep Samaritans services available 24/7.

Recruitment of new volunteers takes place twice yearly at the end of January and again in September.

As our recruitment time approaches we host open nights. We'll give information about what Samaritans do and answer questions you may have. It's an informal evening and there is no pressure to volunteer.

Samaritans currently have over 100 volunteers and no paid staff. The Samaritans always need more volunteers to ensure volunteer cover and to share the workload. Ideally the local office would like to recruit another 10 - 15 volunteers at each recruitment phase. Potential volunteers can come to information sessions to find out what is involved - no commitment is necessary at info stage and many people decide for themselves whether this voluntary opportunity is for them at this time when they have the full facts.
