Volunteer Teacher

Centrum Vitae

About Centrum Vitae

Centrum Vitae is an charitable alternative school providing mainstream education (including state examinations) in a small, home-like environment. The school is open to 12-16 year olds who have not prospered in larger mainstream schools for a variety of reasons. The focus is on maximising opportunities for success and an emphasis on practical subjects, personal development and an afternoon activity programme that develops self-esteem, valuable life skills and a mixture of recreational, cultural, and learning experiences.

What's Involved

Experienced teaching staff are central to the school’s success. Volunteers will play a critical role in an organisation committed to fighting poverty and educational disadvantage. They will make a significant difference in the life of a young person, by contributing to his/her education, social skills, and personal development.

Providing a Junior Certificate Education is the main purpose of the school. We are currently seeking volunteers who would have experience teaching Junior Certificate Mathematics. Other subjects areas: English, History, Business Studies, CSPE, Art, and Religion. We are interested in hearing from teachers of any Junior Cert subjects.

Volunteers will work with like-minded people in a warm, friendly, home-like environment - one tradition of the school is that each morning the staff and students sit around the table and eat their meals together.

After-school activities are important learning opportunities for our students and volunteers can look forward to accompanying the pupils if they wish. Field trips have included visits to the cinema, museums, plays, art galleries, the beach, sailing, kayaking, horse-riding, ice skating, and fencing, to name just a few.

Time Commitment
The amount of time given is entirely up to the volunteer, but we would ask for volunteers who can spare perhaps two or three hours a day, two or three days a week for at least one school term, but ideally for a longer period.

What's required for this position

Patience, flexibility, prepare material for lessons, ability to teach learners who may lack focus or motivation and who may have difficulties with emotions and behaviour.

Volunteers who have other skills which they feel may benefit a young person are most welcome to share their ideas.
