About Drogheda Special Olympics Club
Drogheda Special Olympics Club was founded shortly after the Special Olympics World Summer Games, which were held in Ireland in 2003. The club is community based and by its affiliation to Special Olympics Ireland, it is first and foremost a sports organisation for people with an intellectual disability. However, the Club is also about fun, friendship, fitting in and belonging to a group. Ultimately it’s all about improving the quality of life of its members. Through sport, athletes develop both physically and emotionally, they make new friends and strive to realise their dreams. Promotes and develops the abilities of athletes with varying levels of abilities.
What's Involved
The Club has grown tremendously over the last few years and has now a large number of registered athletes, competing in sports and a waiting list for new athletes to join. New volunteers and coaches are therefore needed.
What's Involved
There are a range of ways that a volunteer can commit their time to support the club depending on the skillset of the person and the time commitment that person is willing to give.
The club trains and competes in football, athletics, basketball, bocce (like boules), swimming and golf. However, bowling, table tennis and badminton are also practiced throughout the training year.
