Dublin Simon Community works to prevent and address homelessness in Dublin, Kildare, Wicklow, Meath, Louth, Cavan and Monaghan. We provide services at all stages of homelessness and enable people to move to a place they can call home.

What's Involved

Carman’s Hall is a 51 bed supported temporary accommodation unit managed by Dublin Simon Community. The service is open 24/7 and provides supported temporary accommodation, food and support for up to six months for men, women and couples who are homeless. The service’s aim is to support clients to move on from homelessness and to be able to sustain long term accommodation.

Part-time volunteers will serve dinners to residents from 5:30-8:30pm. Volunteers will also be expected to engage with residents in a respectful and friendly manner and to carry out and follow all Health and Safety procedures in the kitchen such as clearing plates, filling a dishwasher, cleaning surfaces etc Duties include:
1. To ensure that you arrive promptly at the time agreed and sign in.
2. To comply with and be vigilant around all Health &Safety food policies and procedures e.g. wearing gloves when serving food, checking and recording temperature of food etc.
3. To serve food to residents and record as relevant.
4. To engage with the residents in a respectful and friendly manner
5. To keep the kitchen and surrounding areas including tea and coffee area clean.
6. To fill the dishwasher after dinner and other cleaning tasks as required.
7. To stay within the parameters of your role
8. Attend team meetings as required
9. Work as part of a team.
10. Communicate all issues / events that arise to staff on shift/ Service Managers.
11. Carry a radio and use this as required.
12. Ensure a high standard of client service is provided.
13. Adhere to all DSC policies and procedures of Carman’s Hall.
14. To inform the staff on shift as far in advance as possible if you are unable to attend.

What's required for this position

• To actively participate in team meetings and service reviews/ evaluations and to contribute to the development of policy and practice with your area of work and within Dublin Simon as a whole.
• To report any area of concern to your evening coordinator in a timely manner.
• To show reasonable flexibility in relation to hours of attendance to meet the needs of the role.
• Have a flexible approach to the role in response to organisational change, development and review of best practice.
• Identify training needs with the Volunteer officer and participate in training opportunities appropriate to the role
• To be vigilant to any Health, Safety and Welfare risks in the workplace and bring any concerns to the attention of the Volunteer officer or Health & Safety Representative
• To participate in the efficient flow of information within the organisation by sharing and seeking information as appropriate
• To undertake other duties as may be requested by the line manager from time to time.
• To undertake your role in a manner that is friendly, flexible and informal.
