TechSpace: Creative Technology in Youth Work Volunteer

Camara Ireland

About Camara Ireland

Camara Ireland is working to inspire young people to use their native interest in technology to become digital creators [rather than just consumers of technology]. We train & support educators to confidently identify and adopt technologies within their pedagogy and learning programs. We create learning communities of educators, young people, mentors & volunteers. Camara also hosts and manages TechSpace, a not-for-profit open consortium of organisations. The TechSpace Network was established in 2012 to create a major impact on creative and digital technology education, and youth development in Ireland, with a priority focus on less advantaged sectors of society.

What's Involved

Hosted by the not-for-profit organisation Camara Ireland, the TechSpace programme is an open movement that supports a creative learning network for youth organisations across Ireland. TechSpace is always looking for passionate volunteers to get involved in helping to facilitate creative technology activities for young people in our member youth organisations.

There are currently over 60 TechSpaces in operation across Ireland. There are multiple ways that volunteers over the age of 18 can help to inspire young people attending youth groups through a wide range of activities such as filmmaking, animation and image manipulation (in the area of digital media skills) as well as robotics, electronics and coding (in the areas of STEM and Maker skills). Visit www.TechSpace.ie for more information. TechSpace is also listed on ChangeX, a platform for community initiatives across Ireland.

What's required for this position

Volunteers need to have an interest in developing creative technology skills themselves, but they don't need to be experts! TechSpace trains and supports youth workers and volunteers in youth organisations to gain the skills and confidence to facilitate creative technology activities with young people. TechSpace educators and volunteers often have a wide range of complementary skillsets, ranging from arts, crafts and music to science, ICT and engineering. At the heart of all TechSpace educators and volunteers is a passion for empowering young people to develop key 21st century skills in creativity, collaboration, critical thinking and communication through technology.
