About Arthritis Ireland
A better world for people living with arthritis today and a world without arthritis tomorrow.
Every day, we help people overcome the many adverse effects that arthritis has on their lives by providing the support, information & education needed to better understand & manage the disease. Our programmes & services include: the fully accredited national helpline 0818 252 846, award winning Arthritis Self-Management Course- “Living Well with Arthritis” -which gives people the practical skills required to reduce the effects of arthritis on their lives; nationwide Arthritis Information events which provide information on all aspects of living with arthritis; and our Information booklets available free of charge by post and on our website www.arthritisireland.ie
What's Involved
As a helpline volunteer, you'll be providing information tailored to the needs of each enquirer, in an empathetic and empowering way, providing emotional support to callers to the helpline. Good listening skills are used to help identify exactly what the enquirer's needs are and to provide the appropriate support required during a call, but counselling is not provided.
A typical call will include elements of straightforward information-giving (like the telephone number of Citizens Information Board), listening and empathising with the caller’s ‘story’, and perhaps working with the caller to think through some of the options open to them.
The helpline service tries to empower people by providing good quality information and appropriate support to enable that person to exercise choice and make decisions about how they choose to live their own life.
