About Sligo Family Resource Centre

Sligo Family Resource Centre seeks to serve all families in Sligo town & surrounding area without discrimination, in a warm, caring & open environment. We continually strive to identify ongoing & changing needs and to respond to them in a positive fashion. We aim to provide support, information & development courses of the highest standard to families in the Sligo area.

What's Involved

Working with Syrian refugees newly arrived in Sligo to
*Assist in household management e.g. operating household appliances, heating, refuse collection etc.
*Orientate families within the community - local shops, library, post office, community services etc.
*Befriend and take part in social activities, outings, walks, coffee etc.
*Refer any relevant issues that may arise in your role as Befriender back to the FRC.

All volunteers will receive induction and ongoing support.

What's required for this position

Volunteers should be outgoing, friendly, enthusiastic, open and accepting of difference, patient and willing to engage and spend time with people whose English language is limited.

Level of English required for this role:
Fluent English

Times and commitment required for this role

Hours required: 2hrs Weekly

Other Details

Location of volunteering opportunity:
The base will be Sligo Family Resource Centre but the befriending may take place in the family home or various locations in Sligo Town Or in Balllisodare/Collooney.

Other location details:
Family home and various locations - supermarkets, coffee shops, library, community centres and other outlets in Sligo Town / Ballisodare /Collooney

Volunteers will be provided with the following supports:

  • Support/ advice/ recognition
  • Supervision
  • Initial induction and training
  • Insurance cover

Volunteers will have the opportunity to meet new members of our community, they will learn about the Syrian culture, work as part of a team, share their skills, play a positive role in their community.

Getting there

Volunteers will need to provide their own transport to get to the place of volunteering but will not be expected to use their own car during the volunteering activity. Much of the volunteering activities will be within walking distance of Sligo Town.
