Jesuit Refugee Service Ireland's mission is to accompany, advocate and serve the cause of refugees and forcibly displaced persons worldwide.

What's Involved

The Jesuit Refugee Service is seeking volunteers to co-ordinate and deliver a 1.5 hour 'youth club' session once a week in Balseskin Reception Centre for asylum seekers.

The group takes place every Thursday from 3:30-5:00 in the Resource Room in Balseskin and is for young residents aged between 6 and 14 years.

Current volunteers will soon be finishing up and wish to pass the group on to ensure its continuation.

Tasks involved:

- Planning activities for the young people such as art, games, movies, discussion groups etc.
- Delivering the activities once weekly in Balseskin.
- Collaborating with Jesuit Refugee Service Intercultural Project Worker, Balseskin staff and other professionals in supporting the young people.
- Creating an inclusive and safe environment for the young people to have fun, express themselves and begin the process of integration.

What's required for this position

- Volunteers will be required to undergo garda vetting and sign a JRS Ireland Code of Behaviour and Practice.
- Child protection training will also be required if not already completed,ideal for a student or graduate of youthwork/social work/childcare seeking to gain greater experience in working with young people from a minority ethnic background.
- Skills in group facilitation.
- Effective communication with young people.
- Ability to establish and maintain a trusting and professional relationship with young people & awareness of boundaries.
- Adaptability to changing age group as children in attendance will vary from week to week.
- Commitment and ability to work off own initiative.
- Organisational and time-keeping skills.
